Did you know? The route used by Amtrak between Chicago and Minneapolis follows that of the Milwaukee Road's famous Hiawatha trains. West of Minneapolis trains operate over the former Northern Pacific main line, which was originally—albeit briefly—abandoned by Amtrak in 1971. It's only after crossing into North Dakota that trains follow the Great Northern's titular Empire Builder to Seattle.
